Observe The Flow: A Path To Sit

A Sustainable Re-design of Auburn University’s Village Walkway

The design goal of the project is to create a leisure environment, as well as a quick pathway. Something that fits within the given space that does not intrude on the Village dorm residents’ everyday routine, yet provides an area to sit and observe the wonderful workings of a bioswale- a channel to direct and filter stormwater while removing debris and pollution. Specifically, pollution seen around this site would be: rainwater runoff pollution from the cars on the surrounding street, parking lot, food generated trash from the cafe, and more toxic chemicals from fertilizers.

With this project, I saw the curvature of the pre-existing pathway in front of the Auburn Arena, and wanted to expand that feature. I wanted to mimic the bench feeling as you get from sitting and watching an Auburn Basketball game and create a space to observe. A space to slow down and relax on your way to class.

Thus,

I widened the steps to communicate to a passerby that it is meant to be sat on, and extended the flow all the way down to the end of the walkway- to the crossing street.
